Grace Riley: Lyrics and learning to be a braver friend

I wrote this song about a girl who ran away. And it made me think of this time when I was a kid, there was this girl who was being bullied at school and I knew it wasn’t right but I wasn’t brave enough to stand up for her, or be a friend to her. I didn’t realise it at the time, but now I see it could have been me instead of her, it could be any of us

Grace Riley

by Tina Boonstra

Has anyone here heard from Grace?

The girls at school said she ran away

If I was lost, I’d like to think someone would try to find me

Whatever happened to Grace Riley?

We use be friends when we were kids

Before I cared what other people think

When your clothes don't fit and your hair’s to short school kids just won't defend you

I just I never even tried to

People don’t just, no people don’t just fade out

People don’t just, no people don’t just disappear

If I was lost I’d like to think someone would try to find me

Whatever happened to Grace Riley?

She lived with her gran on my street

Ceramic cats where family photos should be

Till Friday night ambulance lights lit up the street entirely

I think they took your grandma Riley

People don’t just, no people don’t just fade out

People don’t just, no people don’t just disappear

If I was lost I’d like to think someone would try to find me

Whatever happened to Grace Riley?

I see your face on every street

I hear your voice when I’m asleep

All the things I wish I said

I should have been a better friend

Are you okay, are you alone?

Did you find somewhere you could go

Even daylight slips through cracks

If you want you can still come back

Come back, come back
